On 31 August 2026 PayPal confirmed that about 220 India employees were affected, roughly 4 percent of India headcount. Reuters and The Hindu reported that confirmation. An earlier public account had put the India cut near 600. PayPal disputed that larger figure. This row stores 220, the number the company stood behind, and leaves 600 out of the people field. The dispute is the reason the page exists in this form. A ledger that printed 600 because it was the more dramatic number would be repeating a claim the employer had already rejected.
The spokesperson tied the exits to a multi-year transformation already announced under chief executive Enrique Lores. It was not described as a fresh India-only programme invented in the last week of August. That distinction decides how this row sits next to the April global card. The April row, sourced to the Wall Street Journal, stores about 4,760 roles worldwide. Its title even says “4,000+” while the people field is 4,760. Those two presentations of the same global plan are already loose. Adding 4,760 to the August 220 would count one transformation twice and would also mix a worldwide figure with an India figure. Read the April card for the global number. Read this page for the India confirmation.
The Reuters copy moved on 3 September. The row is dated 31 August because that is the day the company said the India roles were affected, not the day the wire published. Using the story date would make a confirmation look like a new round a few days later. We keep one row. Republishing it in September as breaking news would be a second headline for the same confirmation.
Functions named across the coverage were technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance. That list is where reporters found people affected. It is not a quota. Nothing in the confirmation says engineering lost 40 percent of the 220 and finance lost 10. A team of thirty in Chennai can be inside the 220 or outside it. The employer letter is the only document that places a person. This page records the functions that were named and refuses a breakdown the spokesperson did not give.
The cities were named together: Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The source did not say how the 220 divided among those three campuses. A city page may list this row because the city word appears in the source. The people field on that city page is still the India figure. Citing “PayPal cut 220 in Bengaluru” is the error this rule is there to stop. Citing “PayPal cut 220 in India and named three cities without a split” is the sentence the confirmation supports. Offices PayPal may have elsewhere in India were not named, so this row does not reach them.
Four percent belongs to India staff, the base the company used. It is not the percentage attached to the global plan, and it is not 4 percent of PayPal worldwide. The same company can state a global percentage in April and an India percentage in August. Swapping them is how the 600 rumour got ahead of the spokespeople. The company answered it. This page follows that answer.
The 220, as confirmed, is PayPal India employees. Contractor or vendor staff are outside that count unless a later PayPal note puts them in. We do not have that note. A person badged into a Chennai building on a vendor contract cannot read this 220 as their own notice. Their employer of record is the name on their letter.
What we will not infer: that each of the three cities lost 220 roles, or a third of 220, or that the India centres are closing, or that the disputed 600 is a second event waiting to be added later. Confirmation covers the India count and the fact of the reduction. It does not cover a campus table, a team table, or a promise that no further India note will appear. If PayPal publishes a revision, the people field moves and the revision line on this page changes. Until then the citable line is: PayPal confirmed about 220 India roles on 31 August 2026, about 4 percent of India staff, and named Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad without a split.
About 220 PayPal India employees, about 4 percent of India staff, across Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Not a per-city split, and not the earlier global figure of about 4,760.
Revision: 22 Sep 2026: India confirmation separated from the April global row. People field remains 220.
